Lehi, UT - Annika Sorenstam led an all-female team of MacKinzie "Mac" Kline, Natasha Soma, Claudine Goldsmith and Rachel Newren to the win at today's Nokia Champions Challenge Pro-Am held at Thanksgiving Point Golf Club.
The foursome's combined round of 52 put them two shots in front of Dean Wilson's team which finished tied for second with Bobby Wilson's team, but prevailed in a playoff hole.
Sorenstam's group consisted of some of the game's best young female stars. Newren, a native of Salt Lake City and a rising senior at BYU, recently won her second straight Utah Women's Amateur Championship. MacKinzie "Mac" Kline recently competed in the US Women's Amateur at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains, Oregon.
Conditions at Thanksgiving Point were near perfect with temperatures in the mid-80s. The Pro-Am format was a team scramble with a shotgun start. Amateurs were paired in foursomes with one professional or golfing celebrity partner. Each foursome received a new professional or golfing celebrity partner after nine holes, but final results reflected their original celebrity team member.
"The depth of the competition this year is incredible," said tournament host, NBC analyst and Hall of Fame golfer, Johnny Miller. "This tournament has grown into a first class event, and we're excited to have the Sorenstam sisters join us for the first time - obviously they are already making an impact and will be a real threat tomorrow."
In its ninth year, the Nokia Champions Challenge continues a rich history of celebrating family and has afforded some of golf's legends an opportunity to play with their sons, sisters, brothers and friends. Tomorrow's charity tournament features Annika and sister, Charlotta Sorenstam, Gary Player and his son Wayne, Johnny Miller and son Andy and Jack and Mike Nicklaus.
Proceeds from the two-day event will go to the Children's Miracle Network (CMN), an organization that helps raise funds for 170 children's hospitals across North America.
